- 1904 – Himalia, the largest irregular satellite of Jupiter, was discovered by astronomer Charles Dillon Perrine at the Lick Observatory in San Jose, California.
- 1927 – Putting Pants on Philip, the first official film featuring the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, was released.
- 1959 – The current flag of Singapore was adopted, six months after Singapore became self-governing within the British Empire.
- 1960 – The musical Camelot, which would become associated with John F. Kennedy's presidency, opened on Broadway.
- 1967 – Cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human heart transplant on Louis Washkansky at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
- 1968 – Elvis Presley's first television special and first live performance in seven years, Singer Presents...Elvis, was broadcast by NBC.
- 1979 – Per the results of a two-day referendum, the current Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran was adopted.
- 1982 – The United States Environmental Protection Agency tested the soil in Times Beach, Missouri, which revealed high concentrations of dioxin and led to the abandonment of the town.
- 1992 – During extreme weather conditions, the oil tanker Aegean Sea ran aground off the coast of Galicia, Spain, spilling 67,000 tonnes of light crude oil.
- 1999 – NASA lost contact with the Mars Polar Lander moments before it reached the atmosphere of Mars and disappeared.
- 2009 – A suicide bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia, claimed the lives of 25 people, including three ministers of the Transitional Federal Government.

- 1910 – Freda Du Faur (pictured) became the first woman to climb Mount Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand.
- 1976 – Jamaican reggae musician Bob Marley survived an assassination attempt by unknown assailants.
- 1984 – Methyl isocyanate and other toxic chemicals were accidentally released from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, causing the world's worst industrial disaster.
- 1994 – Sony released the PlayStation, the first "computer entertainment platform" to ship 100 million units.
