- 1939 – World War II: The Winter War broke out as the Soviet Red Army invaded Finland and quickly advanced to the Mannerheim Line, an action judged illegal by the League of Nations.

- 1999 – Protests by anti-globalization activists against the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Seattle, Washington, U.S., forced the cancellation of its opening ceremonies.
- 2007 – Swami Rambhadracharya, a Hindu religious leader, released the first Braille version of the Bhagavad Gita scripture.
- 2016 – The Congress of Colombia ratified a revised peace deal to bring the 50-year Colombian conflict to an end.

- 1700 – Great Northern War: Swedish forces led by King Charles XII defeated the Russian army of Tsar Peter the Great at the Battle of Narva.
- 1872 – The first international football match took place at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow, between Scotland and England.
- 1936 – English mathematician Alan Turing published details of the Turing machine (model pictured), a basic abstract symbol-manipulating hypothetical device that can simulate the logic of any computer algorithm.
- 1954 – The first verified case of a human being injured by an extraterrestrial object took place in Sylacauga, Alabama, U.S., when a meteorite crashed through a roof and hit a sleeping woman.
- 1982 – Michael Jackson's Thriller, the best-selling album of all time, was released.
- 2005 – John Sentamu (pictured) was enthroned as Archbishop of York, becoming the first black person to serve as an archbishop in the Church of England.
