- 1775 – American Revolutionary War: Benedict Arnold's expedition departed from Cambridge, Massachusetts, as part of the invasion of Quebec.
- 1776 – British and American leaders held a peace conference on Staten Island, New York, in the hopes of bringing an end to the nascent American Revolutionary War.
- 1780 - American Revolutionary War: Forty-one American soldiers were massacred by loyalists and their Native American allies in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, U.S.
- 1789 – Alexander Hamilton, co-writer of The Federalist Papers, became the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
- 1847 – Stephen Foster's "Oh! Susanna", one of the most famous American songs ever written, premiered at a concert in an ice cream shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 1857 – A brigade of the Mormon militia led a massacre of about 120 California-bound pioneers from Arkansas in present-day Mountain Meadows, Utah.
- 1897 – Gaki Sherocho was captured by the forces of Emperor of Ethiopia Menelik II, bringing an end to the Kingdom of Kaffa.
- 1924 – French composer Gabriel Fauré finished his last piece, a string quartet, before dying two months later.
- 1965 – Indo-Pakistani War: Indian infantry captured the town of Burki near Lahore, Pakistan.
- 1992 – The eye of Hurricane Iniki, the most powerful hurricane to strike the Hawaiian Islands in recorded history, passed directly over the island of Kauai, killing six people and causing around US$1.8 billion dollars in damage.

- 1758 – Seven Years' War: France repelled an invasion attempt by the British in the Battle of Saint Cast.
- 1893 – On the opening day of the first Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda (pictured) introduced Hinduism to the United States.
- 1914 – During the First World War, the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force invaded German New Guinea, winning the Battle of Bita Paka.
- 1978 – Janet Parker, a British medical photographer, became the last recorded person to die from smallpox, leading to a debate on whether the virus should be preserved.
- 2001 – Al-Qaeda used four hijacked passenger airliners to carry out a series of suicide attacks against targets in New York City and the Washington, D.C., area.
